An EEG is one of the most common and informative tests in neurology — a simple, painless way to observe how the brain's electrical activity behaves, helping identify the cause behind seizures, unexplained blackouts, and other neurological symptoms.

What Is an EEG?

An electroencephalogram (EEG) records the electrical signals produced by brain cells as they communicate with each other. Small sensors, called electrodes, are placed on the scalp to pick up this activity, which is then displayed as wave patterns. These patterns can reveal whether the brain's electrical activity is following a normal rhythm or showing signs of irregularity.

Why Is It Done?

An EEG is most commonly used to investigate seizures and epilepsy, but it is also useful for evaluating unexplained episodes of confusion, fainting, memory lapses, or sleep disturbances. It helps confirm a diagnosis, identify the type of seizure activity, and guide treatment decisions.

What to Expect During the Test

The procedure is non-invasive and painless. Electrodes are gently attached to the scalp using a special paste, and the test usually takes between 30 minutes to an hour, though longer recordings (including overnight or video EEG) may be recommended in certain cases. There is no recovery time needed — most people resume normal activities immediately afterward.

Is It Safe?

Yes. An EEG does not involve any electrical current being sent into the body — it only records activity that is already occurring naturally in the brain. It carries no radiation risk and is considered one of the safest diagnostic tools in neurology.

What Happens After
