What Is a VEP?
A Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) test measures the electrical activity generated in the brain in response to visual stimulation, usually a flashing light or a moving checkerboard pattern on a screen. Electrodes placed on the scalp record how quickly and effectively this visual information travels from the eyes to the visual processing centers of the brain.
Why Is It Done?
VEP is particularly useful in evaluating conditions that affect the optic nerve, such as optic neuritis, and is often used as part of the diagnostic process for conditions like multiple sclerosis. It can also help assess unexplained vision changes that don't appear to be related to the eyes themselves.
What to Expect During the Test
The test is painless and non-invasive. You'll be seated comfortably and asked to focus on a screen while electrodes placed on your scalp record your brain's responses. The test typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes, and no recovery time is needed afterward.
Is It Safe?
Yes. VEP involves no injections, radiation, or invasive procedures — it simply records the brain's natural response to visual stimuli, making it one of the gentlest diagnostic tools available.
