EMG: Understanding How Your Muscles and Nerves Work Together

Electromyography, or EMG, looks closely at the electrical activity within muscles — helping uncover whether muscle weakness, cramping, or fatigue is rooted in the muscles themselves, the nerves controlling them, or the connection between the two.

What Is an EMG?

An EMG measures the electrical activity produced by muscles both at rest and during contraction. A thin needle electrode is inserted into the muscle being studied, and the electrical signals are recorded as the muscle relaxes and contracts. This activity is displayed as waveforms that reveal how well the muscle and its nerve supply are functioning.

Why Is It Done?

EMG is used to investigate unexplained muscle weakness, twitching, cramping, or wasting. It plays an important role in diagnosing conditions such as neuromuscular disorders, nerve compression, and certain muscle diseases. It is frequently performed alongside a Nerve Conduction Study for a more complete picture.

What to Expect During the Test

There may be brief, mild discomfort when the needle electrode is inserted, similar to a small pinprick, but this is generally well-tolerated. The test usually takes between 30 to 60 minutes. Mild soreness in the tested muscle may last for a short period afterward but resolves quickly.

Is It Safe?

Yes. EMG is a routine outpatient procedure performed using sterile, single-use electrodes. Serious complications are extremely rare, and the test provides valuable diagnostic information that is difficult to obtain through other means.
