What Is an NCS?
A Nerve Conduction Study measures the speed and strength of electrical signals as they travel along a nerve. Small electrodes are placed on the skin over the nerve being tested, and a mild electrical pulse is applied to stimulate it. The resulting signal is recorded and analyzed to assess how well the nerve is functioning.
Why Is It Done?
NCS is commonly used to investigate conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, diabetic neuropathy, sciatica, and other forms of nerve compression or damage. It helps pinpoint exactly where along a nerve a problem exists, and whether the issue lies in the nerve itself or the surrounding muscle.
What to Expect During the Test
The sensation during an NCS is often described as a brief tingling or muscle twitch — mild and well-tolerated by most people. The test typically takes 15 to 45 minutes depending on how many nerves need to be evaluated, and requires no special preparation or recovery time.
Is It Safe?
Yes. The electrical pulses used are very mild and produce no lasting effects. NCS is a routine, well-established diagnostic tool used safely across all age groups.
What Happens After
Results are often available the same day. Dr Dinesh Kumar uses the findings — often alongside an EMG (see related service) — to determine the underlying cause of nerve-related symptoms and recommend an appropriate treatment plan, which may include medication, physical therapy, or further investigation.
